The short answer
You do not need a flame. A room mist gives you the scent in seconds, a scented card keeps it in the wardrobe and the coats by the door, and an open window for ten minutes before guests arrive does more than any candle. For a Christmas that smells warm rather than sweet, choose bergamot, berries and amber, softened with vanilla: our Home Fragrance Mist at £25 for 250 ml, or Both Lights, the evening scent and the morning one together, £42.

Why skip the candle?
Three reasons, and none of them is about safety alone. A candle takes twenty to forty minutes to fill a room; a mist does it in the time it takes to walk to the door. A candle scents one room and goes out when you leave it; a mist travels with you, from the hallway to the sofa to the pillow. And a candle burns down whether anyone is there or not, while a 250 ml mist, at two or three sprays a day, lasts through the whole of December and well into the new year. If you want the flame for the look of it, keep it, and let the mist do the scenting. We compared the two in more detail in room sprays versus candles.
What does Christmas smell like, without pine and cinnamon?
Most festive candles smell of the same four things: pine, cinnamon, clove and orange. They are lovely for an evening and tiring by the second week. A quieter Christmas smells of what is already in the house. Bergamot is the orange note, cleaner than peel. Berries are the fruit on the table. Amber and a little vanilla are the warmth of a room with the heating on and the curtains drawn. That is Late Light, the evening scent in our Home Fragrance Mist. If your house wakes early and has guests in the kitchen, First Light, citrus, cedar and vetiver, is the morning one. Both Lights puts them side by side.

How to use a room spray so the scent lasts
Spray fabric, not air. Air lets the scent go in minutes; fabric holds it for hours. Two sprays over the sofa cushions and the curtains, one over the bed linen when you turn it down, one on the doormat side of the coat cupboard. Hold the bottle at arm's length and let the mist fall rather than aiming it. Reapply once in the evening, not every hour. A fine mist on cotton and linen leaves no mark; on silk and velvet, spray the lining or test a hidden corner first.
Cooking smells in an open-plan kitchen: what to do before guests arrive
The smell that drifts across an open-plan room is fat and onion settling on soft surfaces. Scent on top of it only makes it sweeter. The order is: window open while the oven is on, lids on the pans, the extractor running until the last tray is out. Then, ten minutes before the doorbell, close the window and mist the fabric in the living half of the room, cushions, throws and curtains, not the kitchen. The kitchen should smell of the food; the sofa should smell of Christmas.
Scent the wardrobe and the coats by the door
The first thing a guest smells is the coat cupboard when you take their coat, and the last is the guest-room wardrobe. A scented card does both without a plug or a flame. Hang one card on the rail with the coats and lay one in the drawer with the guest towels. Each card holds its scent for eight to twelve weeks, so two cards put up in late October see you through to the new year. For the quieter version of the wardrobe smellies people ask about, this is it: no gel, no plastic, a card you put in the paper recycling when it is done. The Wardrobe Pair is one of each scent, £22.

A week of Christmas scent, room by room
Monday, hallway: two sprays on the doormat side of the coat cupboard. Wednesday, living room: cushions and curtains before the evening. Friday, bedrooms: a mist over the turned-down bed. Saturday, guests: window open while cooking, mist the living room at the last minute. Sunday, the wardrobe: a card on the rail if the last one has gone quiet. The whole week takes less than a minute of spraying.

Questions people ask
Is a room spray safe to use on fabric?
On cotton, linen and most upholstery a fine mist from arm's length leaves no mark. Spray the lining of silk, velvet and leather, or test a hidden corner.
Can I spray it near the Christmas tree or the lights?
Keep any mist away from candles, fairy lights and heaters, and never spray onto a hot bulb. Mist the tree skirt or the sofa beside the tree instead.
How long does the scent last after one spray?
On fabric, most of an evening. In the air alone, around twenty minutes, which is why we say spray the cushions, not the room.
Can I use a mist and a candle together?
Yes. Light the candle for the glow and let the mist carry the scent; the two do not compete when they are the same family of notes.
Which scent for the guest room?
Late Light for a room used in the evening, First Light for a room with a morning window. A card in the wardrobe in the same scent ties the room together.
